Counting Collections Throughout the year, every two weeks, the students have been counting objects with a partner in a routine called Counting Collections. This routine is helpful because it is a good way to...
* Develop number sense
* Practice oral counting
* Develop efficient counting strategies
* Group objects in strategic ways
* Practice recording numbers
* Record their thinking
* Have your child choose a way to organize their objects (They can put them on paper plates, cups, or make a ten frame using an egg carton and cut off two of the cups) Ten frames are what we have used in class. Click here for a copy of a ten frame.
* Encourage your child to put the same number in each group. We have worked on organizing by 1’s, and 10’s.

* Have your child record their work on the collection sheet or on a piece of paper. They should draw a picture of how they organized their collection and record the final number. Click here for recording sheet.
* As an extension – is there another way to count the collection? Can you try by 5’s?
Enjoy!
